I expected grief.
I expected tears.
I expected missing him.
What I didn’t expect were the moments when someone said something meant to comfort me…
and it made the hurt even deeper.
The comments that left me standing there thinking:
“How do I even respond to that?”
The truth is, most people mean well.
They simply don’t know what to say when someone they care about is grieving.
But you shouldn’t have to carry the weight of their discomfort while you are carrying your own loss.
That’s why I created this guide.
A simple collection of compassionate scripts and gentle responses to help you answer difficult comments with grace, protect your peace, and walk away knowing you handled the moment well.
Most people mean well.
But words still hurt.

No one prepares you for this part of grief.
People showed up because they cared. They wanted to encourage me. They wanted to say the right thing.
But sometimes the words meant to comfort me were the very words that left me feeling more alone.
I remember standing there trying to be gracious…
Trying not to make someone else uncomfortable…
Trying to find the right response when my own heart was shattered.
What I eventually learned was this:
I didn’t need to defend my grief.
I didn’t need to explain my pain.
And I didn’t need to carry the responsibility of making everyone else comfortable with my loss.
I simply needed words.
Gentle words. Honest words. Prepared words.
That’s why I created this:
The Wise Widow™ Guide: How to Respond to Insensitive Comments
To give you the compassionate responses I wish I had in those difficult moments, so you can protect your peace while still responding with grace.
