Bode Miller: Grieving Publicly

Olympic gold medalYou may all be aware that our Olympic Champion, Bode Miller, outwardly expressed his grief over his younger brother’s death after his medal-winning Super-G run. Why are we so surprised and taken aback when grief is expressed in a normal manner, through our tears. Although I am in agreement that the reporter went beyond what I feel her limits were in evoking Bode’s natural emotions over the death of his brother, I do have to say that I was somewhat pleased with the comments made by those professionals interviewed in the following Time Magazine’s Health and Family article.

When U.S. Olympic skier Bode Miller broke down on camera Sunday during an interview following his bronze-medal-winning run in the Super G, viewers decried the insensitivity of the probing reporter. A former Olympic ski medalist herself, correspondent Christin Cooper took the opportunity to ask about Miller’s recently deceased brother Chelone–after Miller brought it up. Cooper then asked Miller, with tears in his eyes, about a pre-race moment in which he seemed to be talking to someone as he stared into the sky. Miller became so overcome with emotion that he couldn’t finish the interview, moved to a nearby barrier, and dropped to his knees to compose himself.

“You sometimes don’t realize how much you can contain that stuff until the dam breaks and then it’s just a real outpouring,” Miller told Matt Lauer the next day.

I always say if there’s anything we’re assured of in life besides death and taxes, it’s stress and pain. While that may seem like a doomsday statement, if you look at it again, it’s actually quite freeing. If you know stress and pain are inevitable, then you can learn how to be grateful for the good when it’s here and be graceful when the stress and pain arrives.

Walk Away Roasted Cauliflower

I love cauliflower but sometimes there is no time to cut up the head into florets. This simple recipe allows me to put the cauliflower in the oven and get back to business for another 60-90 minutes.

cauliflower

1 head cauliflower, leaves and stem trimmed
2 Tablespoons olive oil, split
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 clove garlic, minced
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 Tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Directions

  • Trim the green leaves off the head of the cauliflower and cut back the stem. Brush it with the olive oil, roast and walk away.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees
  • Put cauliflower on baking sheet and brush/rub with 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • Roast for 60-90 minutes until fork tender.
  • Whisk 1 Tablespoon olive oil, lemon juice, mustard and garlic and spread on roasted cauliflower.
  • Sprinkle cauliflower with pepper and parsley and serve.

  1. Audrey , thank you for sharing the video by Dr Greger. I forwarded it to my son who has a consulting business to help producers of vegan foods, market their products to restaurants and stores across the country. My son age 29 has been a vegan for 10 years of his own decision. When he started people would make many negative comments about his diet and lifestyle, today he is admired by those same people.

      You are welcome. I have, for many years, followed Dr. Gregor. He’s amusing it his presentation of what I believe is critical information for all of us to hear. Being vegan is not easy however, there are a greater number of people now focusing on what is being called a plant based diet so as to avoid any negative comments as your son experienced. Truly, as a vegan since 2009, I believe more people admire those that avoid the temptation of the standard American diet.
